American Corner Chittagong

Chittagong, Bangladesh’s second city, is not only the chief port of Bangladesh, it is a city with its own distinct and vibrant culture. Many of the major industries and businesses in Chittagong focus on shipping and international trade, making it a natural subject for outreach from the United States. Issues such as trade, communication networks, cross-border issues, health, the environment and security are areas of reoccurring interest for the United States in the Chittagong area.
Chittagong was the site for the very first America Week in South Asia. A resounding success, thousands of people visited the various sites of the event, learning about what the U.S. and its embassy has to offer the people of Chittagong. With strong and vigorous support from Marry Ann Peters, the U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, the America Week showcased a number of programs, from student advising, to news events, to cultural events, to information booths on a number of topics, to a series of dinners and lunches to introduce the people of Chittagong to the American Embassy. Local NGOs and USAID were strong partners in the America Week outreach, and on the strength of the success of the Chittagong America Week, subsequent events in Syhlet and Rajshahi occurred.
At the conclusion of the America Week the introduction of the new American Corner was announced. Not only was Chittagong the site of the first America Week, but it was also the focal point of one of the first American Corners. Today, Chittagong proudly hosts the American Corner at the Independent University of Bangladesh - Chittagong Campus. Chittagong remains a leading partner in U.S. outreach to Bangladesh.
American Corners are information resource and outreach centers of the American Center of the U.S. Embassy. Books, journals, magazines, video and CD-ROMs with a focus on various aspects of the United States are available for anybody who visits. The first American Corner in South Asia was inaugurated on January 22, 2003 in the Independent University of Bangladesh - Chittagong Campus. The second American Corner was inaugurated on January 15, 2004 in the Sylhet International University.
American Corner - Chittagong is open five days a week, Sunday through Thursday, from 10:00 pm to 4:30 pm. It is situated at the Independent University (IUB) Cittagong Campus, 12 Jamal Khan Road, Chittagong-4000. Phone number: (031) 622946; (031) 636484; (031) 611262.
